Everything Everywhere All at Once Review
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a different film. It's unique. In fact, this might be the most unique film my eyes and ears ever witnessed.
Last Tuesday I went to the mall to get away from the confines of my home and to buy a pair of jeans. I stopped momentarily in a Macy's and sat my bag down when I saw a mirror. I just checked myself out in the mirror and fixed myself and then went over to a Starbucks to my surprise was in the Macy's. I talked to the baristas and speculated on my order when two men approached me and told me to remove the perfume in my bag. Neither of these men were in any kind of uniform. One of the men said you can either go to jail today or take out the perfume. I told them I didn't have anything and the man said "okay," and then the two of them left and got on their phones. The whole situation made me uncomfortable and after I got my lemonade loaf from Starbucks I immediately headed out the mall. No police to meet me anywhere.
I had planned that day to go to the movies. I heard of this film in passing on YouTube in an ad and in a thumbnail and just decided to go see it. I intended to see it earlier, but that day I made the effort to finally do it and I'm glad I did. It brought my spirits up in a day that made me cautious and upset. I knew practically nothing about this film. I saw no trailers, read nor watched any reviews and I'm glad I did. It was refreshing to experience a movie and fully going in to explore its content. I would recommend others to do the same, but it is hard for me to write this review without giving plot elements or spoilers, but I will try my best to give my general thoughts of what it does right and if I feel like I want to delve into spoilers I will give a warning.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a visual spectacle, fun, thought provoking, and emotional ride. I'm not sure if I've seen anything that looked this good. The special effects are fantastical, cerebral, and all accounts mind fuckery. The movie is shot at a contrast that makes every color pop when it needs to. The story itself was also gripping. I knew nothing of this film beyond the poster and a ten second ad I saw on YouTube so I went in only knowing it was going to have some sci-fi elements, maybe a martial arts fil, and maybe some multiverse stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was just not a sci-fi movie. It was a character study. A delve into the human heart.
All of the central characters present in this film are layered. No one feels one note or two dimensional and ones you do think are over the course of the film present a new side of themselves that bring a new perspective to their character. This is not only due to great writing, but performances as well. Veteran actress Michelle Yeoh from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fame is remarkable and you also have nolstagic favorites like James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis. Perhaps, my most favorite performance came from Stephanie Hsu who is actually quite funny. That's right. Everything Everywhere All at Once also has a suprising amount of humor. There's dry humor, situational humor, and even adult humor. Yeah, this is rated R which I also didn't know going in. You'll laugh plenty throughout this film. There is also plenty of action throughout. You get some fights and they're amazing and they're coupled with some stellar and unique editing. Without giving anything away there's a nice scene with two characters that feels desolate, yet calm and freeing and it's one I'll never forget.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is perhaps the best movie I've seen and I'm not exaggerating. That was the feeling I had when the credits rolled. I hung on until the end of the credits hoping for more. There wasn't so I'm just letting you all know not to stay during the credits unless you just like to listen to the music. This film has also made me more excited for Doctor Strange Into the Multiverse of Madness. I think I will see this at least one more time and after some time has passed I will confidentally say if this is my favorite film. Right now, it definitely is.
